Red wine is more likely to need decanting. Decanting is the process of pouring wine into a wide based jug, this allows for the sediment to settle and avoid it being poured into your glass. Sediment can make the wine taste bitter, and is normally more prevalent in older wines. Decanting can also help younger wines aerate which helps to allow the release of the flavors from the wine.
